Aus der Sicht der Brandursachenermittlung ist der Brandherd der Bereich, in dem das Feuer entstanden ist, während die Brandausbruchsstelle den Ausgangspunkt des Feuers noch genauer bezeichnet.
Vor allem zur Ermittlung der Brandursache ist es unbedingt notwendig, den Brandherd näher einzugrenzen bzw. ausfindig zu machen. Aber auch für die Feuerwehren gilt es, oft unter Zuhilfenahme einer Wärmebildkamera, den oder alle Brandherd(e) zu finden und abzulöschen, damit es später nicht zu erneuten Bränden oder einem Wiederaufflammen kommt.
Je heftiger ein Brand ist, umso schwieriger ist es anschließend, den eigentlichen Brandherd zu eruieren und die Brandursache zu beweisen.
Die Ermittlung des Brandherdes erfolgt durch Brandursachenermittler der Polizei oder Sachverständige, die auf diesem Gebiet tätig sind. Die Ermittlung des Brandherdes ist Voraussetzung für die Feststellung einer Brandursache, weil sich der Brandursprung (Zündquelle) mit ziemlicher Sicherheit hier finden lässt.
Brandursachen gliedern sich in technische Brandursachen, natürliche Brandursachen oder stehen im Zusammenhang mit dem Fehlverhalten (Tun oder Unterlassen; Fahrlässigkeit oder Vorsatz) von Personen.
Der Brandherd kann in aller Regel an Hand von typischen Spuren an der Brandstelle ausfindig gemacht werden, aber auch Zeugenaussagen können hier sehr hilfreich sein.
