Kohlendioxid entsteht durch die Verbrennung von Kohlenstoffmonoxid und es verbrennt mit blauer Flamme.
Kohlendioxid (CO2) ist ein Gas, welches farb- und geruchslos sowie in Wasser löslich ist.
Das Gas ist nicht brennbar und schwerer als Luft. Die große Dichte des Gases ist bei Bränden im Zusammenhang mit der Menschenrettung bedeutsam, da es sich in tiefer gelegenen Etagen, Gruben, Vertiefungen usw. ansammelt. Bei längerer Einatmung von Kohlendioxid führt dies durch Verdrängung des Sauerstoffs schnell zur Atemnot, Bewußtlosigkeit und letztendlich zum Tod.
Der Stickeffekt des Gases wird auch bei Löschmitteln ausgenutzt.
Bei vielen Verbrennungsreaktionen entstehen sowohl Kohlenmonoxid als auch Kohlendioxid.
